Post-operative care
After bariatric surgery, it is necessary to count on long-term supervision at the bariatric outpatient clinic and also at the nutritional outpatient clinic. The post-operative regimen starts in the hospital, when the patient eats only a liquid diet, later switches to a porridge diet and finally to a solid diet (see nutrition after surgery). These are the principles of a healthy diet.
After surgery, weight loss is monitored, as is body fat loss and the decrease of BMI. Doctors monitor the patient’s health and the progression of diseases the patient was treated for before surgery. With weight loss, associated diseases often improve (e.g. high blood pressure) and it is not necessary to take medication for these diseases - always in consultation with your doctor, of course!
Initially, the check-ups at the bariatric outpatient clinic are more frequent. Later the patient comes for a check-up once every 3 months or as needed. Check-ups at the nutritional clinic are initially once a month, and over time also once every 3 months.
Blood counts should be monitored regularly to prevent deficiencies of certain nutrients, vitamins and minerals (calcium, zinc, magnesium, iron, vitamin D, vitamin B, protein...)
