Surgery

We perform two types of surgery at our hospital:
1. Gastric Sleeve Resection
The principle of the operation is a longitudinal resection of the stomach in a line starting 5 cm from the stomach outlet (pylorus) and continuing parallel with a small curve to the angle between the esophagus and the widest part of the stomach (fundus). The left - resected - part of the stomach is removed from the body.
The method is called restrictive. This means that the stomach is prevented from receiving larger portions of food as a result of a significant /sleeve-like/ narrowing of the stomach. At the same time, by removing the gastric fundus, the level of the Ghrelin hormone, which is formed in this area, is reduced. This hormone significantly influences the feeling of hunger - by reducing it, we can positively influence the intake of food. A beneficial metabolic effect is also achieved by affecting the secretion of duodenal hormones, which reduce insulin resistance with a very positive effect on blood sugar levels. The majority of type II diabetic patients who have undergone surgery have seen significantly reduced or no anti-diabetic therapy.
It is the most commonly performed bariatric surgery in the world.
The method is unsuitable for patients with preoperatively proven gastric reflux into the esophagus.
2. Roux-Y Gastric Bypass
The principle of the operation is the creation of a small stomach of 20-40 ml and the removal of the remaining part of the stomach and the adjacent section of the small intestine from the passage of the received food via so-called Roux-Y plastic surgery.
The method combines restriction /reduced dietary intake/ with malabsorption /reduced nutrient absorption/. Gastric bypass surgery is slightly more effective than gastric sleeve resection. It is a more demanding surgical procedure, which involves a slightly higher risk of complications.
Postoperatively, mineral and vitamin levels should be monitored consistently and supplemented appropriately.
Gastric bypass surgery is currently the most effective treatment for type II diabetes in obese patients.
It is the second most commonly performed bariatric surgery in the world.
Gastric sleeve resection and R-Y gastric bypass are the two absolutely dominant methods of bariatric and metabolic surgery in the world, which is why we offer them to our patients at the Bariatric Center in Náchod.
