Pre-operative preparation

If you decide to undergo bariatric surgery, your first steps will likely lead you to the bariatric outpatient clinic, where you need to make an appointment in advance (see contacts). The doctors will explain what bariatric surgery entails, who it is suitable for and who it is not, what types of surgeries are performed at Náchod Hospital, what the risks of surgery are, what benefits it offers, and what examinations you must undergo before the procedure.  The doctor will also inform you about the dietary changes you will need to adopt after the surgery. This first appointment is essentially an informative consultation.

Before the surgery, every patient should undergo the following examinations:

  • gastroscopy
  • abdominal ultrasound
  • internal and endocrinological examination
  • psychological evaluation
  • preoperative examination and anesthesiology consultation
  • nutritional assessment (contact: 702 250 505)
  • additional examinations as deemed necessary by the doctor (spirometry, chest X-ray, heart examination…)

If you are traveling from a distant location, ask your general practitioner to perform these examinations and bring the results with you to the initial consultation:

  • gastroscopy
  • abdominal ultrasound
  • internal and endocrinological examination
  • psychological evaluation

If all examinations are in order, the patient will receive a surgery date. The patient visits the bariatric clinic before the operation and continues to do so after the surgery. Likewise, they will see a nutritionist both before and after the procedure, who monitors their diet in the preoperative period (see high-protein diet) and postoperatively. The nutritionist also tracks   weight loss progress.
